Happy National Running Day!

Happy National Running Day! How awesome is it to have a day on which we celebrate all things running 🙂
I was reading a few blogs and stumbled across a post on http://www.runningwithattitude.com/ which encourages runners to answer a few questions in honour of National Running Day. I decided to give it a go! National running day

Why do you run?
My ex-fiancé used to run regularly and I’d cheer him on at various events. Seeing amputees and elderly participants run 13.1 miles or more was fascinating, humbling and made me realise that anyone of any age and ability can run. Why wasn’t I giving it a go? I was inspired! I run for people who can’t. When I’m 90 years old in a wheelchair, I want to look back and know that I made the most out of life, and out of my legs and lungs!

How do you plan to celebrate National Running Day?
Today I’ve signed up for three running events and purchased a new running vest, sports bra, t-shirt and shorts. Plus I’m writing this blog post!

How many miles have you run so far this year?
I run 6K every Tuesday, and then whenever else I get chance; plus I take part in a running event once a month or so. Doing the maths would take a while…!

What big events do you have on the race calendar so far this year?
At least another 11 events are registered and paid for. The biggest one for me will be the Royal Parks half marathon in October; I’ve never done it and was lucky enough to get a place in the ballot. So excited!

Before I leave for a run I must have:
My iPhone in a phone holder armband, headphones, inhaler and water. For events I swap the water with lucozade and then abuse the free water stations.

Do you have one favourite app to track your runs?
The old corny classics such as Eye of a Tiger and Simply The Best! Any dance or up-beat songs really; I have a separate running playlist on my iPhone.

Who is your favourite running partner?
I run with my colleague and friend Dan (who helped me with this website!) every Tuesday and we have a good old natter and a laugh on the way round, which makes the run easier.

What races have you run so far this year?
Four: London Winter Run 10K, Sevenoaks Knole Park 10K, Brighton 10K and the Major Series South. Not as many as I would have liked: this time last year I’d done the Bupa 10,000 and the Moonwalk Marathon too. I’m stepping up the activity with gusto now!

If you had to give someone a piece of advice about running, what would it be?
It depends on what you want to get out of running really, but I’d say: don’t focus on time! Start slowly, pace yourself, don’t overdo it, and just enjoy it. I never run to get a good time, and never have. Being able to cross a finish line, whether it takes 20minutes or two hours, is enough for me.

Describe your relationship with running in one word:
Committed.

I hope someone out there will be inspired to lace up for the first time…! Happy running. 🙂

  1. Thank you so much for your kind words on my RunnersKnees blog. I didn’t get to the Two Tunnels in the end due to a back injury. But was back on it at Bupa Westminster Mile and London 10 for Personal Bests a week later. Come onto Twitter and say hi!
