Hildenborough Road Races 2019

The Hildenborough Road Races are a long-standing event, with 2015 marking the 30th year since the first event was held.

The Races, held annually on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May and organised by local residents, bring people together to raise money for local causes including schools, clubs and charities, whilst keeping to the ethos of being fun for all of the family. There is something to suit all abilities, with road-races of 10 miles, 5 miles and 2.5 miles, and smaller off-road races for children.

Despite living 20-30 minutes’ drive away, I’d never actually heard of the Hildenborough Road Races, and only researched it after hearing about it from Adam. The entry fee for the 5 Mile race was a bargain £10 (Affiliated), so I signed up there and then.

Hildenborough Road Races 2019The 5 Mile race didn’t start until 2:30pm on Monday 6th May, which meant that I could have a nice long lie-in! I had porridge and Beanies coffee for breakfast, with Special K and loads of water (and another coffee!) for lunch, before arriving at the event HQ for 2:15. Parking outside the Hildenborough recreation ground was simple, with a short walk to the start line. The grounds were buzzing, teaming with runners; and there were a few stalls, bouncy castles and an ice-cream van, too.

The weather was mild, which meant perfect running conditions. I wore a USA Pro sports bra, Adidas vest, unbranded neck buff, Nike headband, Primark mesh leggings, and 1000 Mile trainer socks with my new Brooks Launch 5 trainers, resulting in a comfortable outfit. I felt really good throughout and definitely had a good, enjoyable run.

Hildenborough Road Races 2019The route was a circular lap around the back roads and residential streets of Hildenborough – super hilly and challenging! However, there were plenty of water stations (I think I counted three, in the 5 Mile route?) with paper cups and friendly marshals!

The finish line was a bit daunting, as I was completely on my own at that point and had to run into the recreation ground with a finishing funnel lined with supporters all watching me! But the whole experience was a lovely one, with a nice atmosphere. I was handed a medal, water and Emily banana fig crisps at the finish line, and went home feeling pleased that I’d taken part. The chip-timing results were posted Live online, too. I’d recommend this event to others and would take part again  🙂
